It is with dismay and sadness that the Frobenius Institute bids farewell to Peter Steigerwald, who managed and shaped the photo archive for over three decades. His extraordinary expertise, creativity and tireless inventiveness made him an exceptional personality. He was a tinkerer in the best sense of the word, always thinking beyond standards, always searching for the perfect solution.
Numerous museum exhibitions bear his signature: he accompanied many of them, initiated some himself, always with a sure eye and great passion for the image. Privately, he was also a gifted photographer, deeply rooted in analogue photography. Frankfurt in particular was more than just a motif for him; it was a visual home that he knew how to capture in an incomparable way with great technical sophistication.
With his passing, we have lost not only an outstanding expert, but also an inspiring colleague and human being. We will miss his vision, his knowledge and his commitment. We hope that his artistic legacy will receive the recognition and attention it deserves.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends and colleagues.
