Gabriele Franke studierte Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Historische Ethnologie und Archäometrie in Frankfurt am Main. Ihre Dissertation zur Chronologie und Keramik der nigerianischen Nok-Kultur, mit der sie 2015 promoviert wurde, erhielt 2016 den Christa Verhein-Preis zur Förderung der Archäologie. Als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin arbeitete sie von 2009 bis 2021 in dem von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gefördertem Langfristvorhaben „Entwicklung komplexer Gesellschaften im subsaharischen Afrika: Die Nok-Kultur Nigerias“, wo sie schwerpunktmäßig für Keramikanalysen, Chronologie und langfristige Datensicherung zuständig war. Gegenwärtig ist sie im DFG-Projekt „Felsbilder der Mik-Berge, Namibia, im besiedlungsgeschichtlichen und landschaftlichen Kontext“ tätig.
