Carlos Magnavita studierte Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Historische Ethnologie und Geologie in Frankfurt am Main. Mit einer Dissertation zur Besiedlungsgeschichte des südwestlichen Tschadbeckens in Nigeria wurde er im Jahr 2003 an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main promoviert. Als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter nahm er an verschiedenen Forschungsprojekten teil, unter anderem am von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Sonderforschungsbereich 268 „Westafrikanische Savanne“ (1999 — 2003), der DFG-Forschergruppe 510 „Ökologischer Wandel und kulturelle Umbrüche in West- und Zentralafrika“ (2004 - 2009) und an dem vom European Research Council (ERC) finanzierten Vorhaben „Crossroads of Empires“ (2011 - 2015). Gegenwärtig forscht er als Projektleiter im Rahmen des DFG-Vorhabens „Die Tschadseeregion als Wegekreuz“ (2019 - 2021) über die bisher wenig bekannten Verbindungen des Kanem-Borno Reiches mit anderen afrikanischen Regionen.
