Professor of German civilisation and the history of anthropology at Sorbonne Nouvelle University. He is in charge of the French ANR/DFG "Anthropos" programme and makes documentaries on the history of his discipline for French and German television. He is the creator of the Franco-German master's degree in ethnology and social anthropology at the EHESS and the Goethe University in Frankfurt, where he teaches. He is an associate member of the Frobenius Institute (research in cultural anthropology) at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main.

As part of the research programme he runs with Richard Kuba, he took part in various exhibitions in Paris, Berlin and Dakar and designed the accompanying events. He is responsible for the Franco-German doctoral college entitled "Representing the Other: museums, universities, ethnology". Is research interests include Regional Politics and Identity, German Ethnology, Geopolitics of Germany.

 He is currently co-curator with Richard Kuba and Egidia Souto of the "Pre-histomania" exhibition on the Frobenius collection at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris (Nov-2023-May 2024).
