Sophia Thubauville hat Ethnologie, Afrikanische Philologie und Politikwissenschaft an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz studiert. Ab 2006 war sie dort als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Sonderforschungsbereich 295 „Sprachliche und kulturelle Kontakte“ tätig. 2009 wurde sie mit einer von Ivo Strecker betreuten Arbeit über sich verändernde Lebensentwürfe von Frauen der Maale (Äthiopien) promoviert. Im Anschluss an ihre Promotion leitete sie das South Omo Research Center in Südäthiopien. Seit 2010 ist sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin und Leiterin der Bibliothek am Frobenius-Institut beschäftigt. Thubauville ist aktives Mitglied der European Librarians in African Studies (ELIAS) und der Kommission für Migration der International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Science (IUAES) und Gründungsmitglied der AG "Familie im Feld" der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kultur-und Sozialanthropologie.
